The UAE

William Gueraiche's work is the first scholarly study of the UAE's campaign to establish itself on the international stage and to explore the impact that its economic transformation has had on the country. Emirati society remains at core conservative and the preservation of Arab-Islamic identity remains important, yet the UAE has the highest proportion of foreigners of any country in the world. What does this mean for the identity of Emiratis living there and what are the implications for foreigners working there? The author also explores the environmental costs of the Dubai lifestyle, its 'Look East' policy and increasing volume of trade with eastern Asia, and the ways in which the UAE has sought to challenge the traditional hegemony of Saudi Arabia in the region. In a final chapter the author examines the impact of the economic depression that called the whole representation of Dubai into question.

This book explores the topic of culture, services and intercultural service encounters. The primary objective is to asses the possibility of a correlation between the behavior of service employees and the cultural background of their customers during intercultural service sncounters. An example of the airline industry in the Middle East was used since the majority of the employees come from other parts of the world and have to come to terms not only with living in a culturally diffferent environment (stationed in Abu Dhabi or Dubai) but also with working with customers of various backgrounds and cultures.

I have been living in Dubai for nearly 3 years now, and I have to admit, it is a city where you could live a very comfortable life. It is estimated that out of almost 3 millions habitants in Dubai, only 15 percent of them are Emiratis, while the other 85 percent are expatriates, coming mostly from Asia (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). However, the European migration has grown relatively over time. The UAE, in recent years has attained the status of a favorite destination for Italian immigrants. With a little over 10,000 Italians in the country, UAE has the largest Italian community in the MENA region. Foreigners usually work in the private sector while locals are employed in the public sector, from this the huge duality between private and public labour market. Only 1% of the private sector workforce is made up of nationals. A part from workers and families, the UAE also attracts growing numbers of foreign university students. This is the reason why human resources and education are now a days the center of the economy. GCC governments are investing heavily in the education sector, especially Saudi Arabia's which invest around a quarter of total government spending.
